Tips for Buying and Maintaining Refrigerators
Refrigerators are one of the most commonly used appliances in most every home. They store food and keep it cold. This is a valuable service indeed, as many foods require refrigeration in order to stay fresh and safe to eat. If you need a new refrigerator, there are lots of appealing choices on the market today. You'll find great models from brands like Kenmore, Maytag, Whirlpool, GE and KitchenAid.
There are also a variety of different refrigerator styles to choose from. Common styles include the side by side refrigerator and the top freezer refrigerator. Both of these styles not only include a refrigeration compartment, but a freezer compartment as well. This is not only convenient, but space efficient as well. Usually, the side by side refrigerator model will offer more freezer space than the top freezer model will. Many side by side refrigerator models also offer extra features like ice makers and ice and water dispensers. Some of today's models even feature special zones for storing different types of foods and beverages at precisely the right temperature. Most every refrigerator will come with compartments for storing dairy and vegetables in addition to a variety of shelves.
In the kitchen appliance department of your local home appliance store, you will also find compact models, commercial grade models, and separate appliances like freezers and wine coolers. There's something for every budget, kitchen size and style. You'll find not only traditional refrigerator models but those made from wood, stainless steel and even glass. Your refrigerator can be a thing of beauty as well as a necessary appliance.
Every refrigerator will need some maintenance. For example, it is important to clean out your refrigerator on a regular basis to remove food that is no longer safe to eat. Leaving food in the refrigerator too long can lead to unpleasant odors. Along with throwing out old leftovers, it's important to sponge down the exterior and interior of your refrigerator with a damp sponge. You may want to use a non-toxic cleaner like baking soda or vinegar to disinfect and remove odors.
Different refrigerators will have different maintenance needs. Those with water dispensers may require special filters. Refer to the owner's manual that came with your refrigerator for complete operating and cleaning instructions. Keeping your refrigerator at the right temperature and making sure it's kept clean and well-maintained can ensure years of great service.
